For the past five weeks, the mere mention of the words “chocolate” or “pop” can cause either a deep discussion about one’s faith, or a deep desire to plug one’s ears and avoid the topic. Every year, millions of people across the globe participate in the Christian celebration of Lent for 40 days leading up to Easter.
Yes, that big party called Mardi Gras in New Orleans is actually religious (despite recent practices that suggest otherwise, with the use of beads). And those delicious, fattening jelly donuts (Paczkis) are used to …

Disaster has struck once again in the world, first Haiti and now Chile. On Saturday Feb. 27, 2010, Chile, a Latin country located in the south west of South America, was struck by a scale-topping earthquake of 8.8 on the rector scale, along with 120 aftershocks and multiple tsunamis. So far they have reported deaths of about 279 people.
What shocks me the most is the lack of aid from the rest of the world, especially the U.S. Not long ago, horrible earthquakes occurred in Haiti, and the whole world jumped …

Every year, through out the United States communities get together to walk through the night, sometimes for even 24 hours, to raise money to help fight against cancer. The Relay for Life is an event that was created by the American Cancer Society to celebrate the people who have overcome the disease, to remember all the loved ones we have lost, and to find ways in which we can battle this life threatening disease.
The relay consists of three parts, celebration, remembrance, and …

Shutter Island brightens a lacking genre

Some movies leave you walking out of the theatre with a thought sort of like, “What the hell just happened, and how did it all come together and make sense?” Psychological thriller Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese, takes this feeling and magnifies it times 10.
In Shutter Island, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) travel to Ashecliff Hospital, located on Shutter Island, in order to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients there, a criminally insane woman named Rachel Solando. As the …

Every year the entire junior class attends a “Making It Count” assembly. The purpose of the assembly is to assist students in choosing the college that is right for them based on a variety of factors. Some of the factors include learning styles, class size, student population size preference, budget, and previous academic performances.
On the other hand, admission departments consider a multitude of factors including previous course selections, AP courses, recommendations from teachers, interests outside of the classroom, standardized test scores, written essays, class rank, interviews with the administration, and …

After Asher Roth came and left I thought we would be done with the white, musical, frat-boy sub genre of hip-hop and R&B. Apparently not, I just spent my Thursday night watching singer, Mike Posner, gallop around stage at the Plachta Auditorium at Central Michigan University, gradually peeling off his clothes and expressing his love for each and every one of us.
I made the trip to Central almost exclusively to see this concert, but now I almost regret going. I mean, I had a lot of homework, it was my …

Imagine walking down the red carpet surrounded by crowds of people, flashes coming from cameras in each direction. This is your senior Prom. This year’s theme is Hollywood with tons of awesome decorations to make the scene as close to realistic as possible.
Not only will there be parents and friends lined up to take everyone’s picture as they walk along the red carpet, but also professional photos by Gavin Smith will be available inside. Anyone may purchase a star like the walk of fame with their name on it for …

Attempting to raise spirits for the annual Sadies Dance, an entire week was dedicated to different events. However, little attention was paid to any of the matters. Whether it was having no school spirit or just forgetting, Spirit Week wasn’t the biggest hit.
Beginning the week on Tuesday, a new day was included to help those without a date for the dance possibly find one last minute. Students wore red if they had a date, green if they didn’t have a date, and yellow if they were undecided.
“I don’t think anyone …

The Massive Effect

It is Bioware’s crown jewel in the years to come. For those who don’t know, Bioware is the company that developed Mass Effect 1 and 2. They also created the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic series, Dragon Age: Origins, and other well-known games. They have been hard at work over the past few years tweaking and changing features and details that plagued Mass Effect 1.
I have to say, they deserve a lot of credit for this new addition to the Mass Effect trilogy. Did I say trilogy? Well …

With course selections being passed out and handed in, many students debate which classes to choose. Counselors and teachers combined are both trying to increase the number of students in AP classes.
Is this really a good idea? Pushing teens to take AP classes when they aren’t ready could cause stress, even worse grades, or in many cases, the class is dropped by the student. In addition to this, by putting regular students in AP classes, the classroom environment AP tries to create, as well as, the speed of learning can …

Throughout sports history, there have been so many lawsuits filed for everything from illegal drug use, to rape, to even throwing beer at basketball players. But never has there been a lawsuit filed regarding misconduct of hot dogs. That is, not until John Coomer recently filed one on Feb. 8, 2010 against Major League Baseball Team, the Kansas City Royals.
Coomer attended the Royals vs. Tigers game on Sept. 9, 2009 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO. The Royals fan sat six rows behind the third base dugout, a popular …
