In the age of over processed yet convenient foods, and the nagging urge to eat healthier, a television show emerges that makes America really think. English chef and media personality, Jamie Oliver, comes to network television with his ground breaking new show, “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,” a show that examines what exactly the American people eat.
In the beginning of the season viewers were shocked, along with Oliver, to find that elementary school students of Huntington, West Virginia, statistically one of the unhealthiest cities in the country, don’t even know the …

The talent show is a time to shine

This time of year most students are counting down the days to summer. Others, however, are spending their afternoons practicing and perfecting their passions to show an audience at this year’s Talent Show.
“It’s a great way for kids not in band, or other school groups to express their talents,” explained Susan Powers.
Powers, Unite leader, is holding the 10th annual spring Talent Show, May 22. Auditions were April 21 and numerous students tried out. They were rated on a scale by selected Unite members, and were called the week of the …

With course selections being passed out and handed in, many students debate which classes to choose. Counselors and teachers combined are both trying to increase the number of students in AP classes.
Is this really a good idea? Pushing teens to take AP classes when they aren’t ready could cause stress, even worse grades, or in many cases, the class is dropped by the student. In addition to this, by putting regular students in AP classes, the classroom environment AP tries to create, as well as, the speed of learning can …

Braving the cold weather, harsh wind, and high slopes, the Grand Blanc High School Ski Team practices and competes in hopes of qualifying for SEMSLs and states. The team, coached by David Clement and John Lambert, practices four hours a week at Mount Holly and races another four hours a week against teams from all over Oakland and Genesee County.
During that week, they have two main races: Slalom and GS (giant slalom). GS is wider, while slalom is a smaller course.
“My favorite race is slalom because you get to hit …

Olympic Coverage Shouldn’t Be PG-13

The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, began with a terrible tragedy. Nodar Kumaritashvili, a luger from the Georgian Olympic team, was killed during his trial run of what would have been the 21-year-old athlete’s first Olympic games. Kumaritashvili’s fatal crash was caused when he lost control in the final turn and was thrown off his luge and over the side of the track where his body hit a steel pole. Paramedics tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead later at the Whistler Hospital.
Millions of people grieved along …

Zero Tolerance

Everyone does it. Stick gum to the underside of desks. Write “Jeff was here” on a bathroom stall or call someone a name, hoping the now-degraded person walks in to the bathroom and sees it. But this is not the case with a 12-year-old girl in Forest Hills, New York. This girl, Alexa Gonzalez, had written, “I love my friends Abby and Faith, Lex was here 2/1/10″ on a classroom desk with a green marker. What was the punishment? Two police officers handcuffing the girl and escorting her out of …

Frankenmuth Snow Fest

Students from Steve Barker’s Studio Art class volunteered to represent GBHS at this year’s ice sculpting competition in Frankenmuth. Seniors Rebecca Thresher, Kaitlynn Brasher, Ariele Harris, and junior Jessica Kallie, with sophomore back-up Jin Kwag. They showed their determination and all had to leave right after school and carve the sculpture during the last days of midterms for the competition. “Our ice sculpture, actually made from snow, starts as an 8-foot tall and 6-foot wide and deep snow block,” Barker explained. Team captain and previous member Rebecca Thresher recalled, “We …

Screaming fans lined the red carpet, hoping to get a glimpse of the hottest movie guys this fall. Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are every girl’s dream guys, fresh off the scenes of New Moon, the latest installment in the Twilight Saga, based off the books by Stephanie Meyer. These spellbound fans and those across the world found it difficult to see that New Moon was one of the worst movies in the past year—second only to its predecessor, Twilight.
This movie was far from spellbinding, in fact, I found myself …

Wal-Mart employees coming in sick?

Have you ever imagined how many germs are at your local supermarket? Thousands of people walk through the store everyday, many of them sick. Yet we still lug around the carts not cleaning them off first, and touch many things that strangers have already touched and are crawling with germs. Whether we like to admit it or not, a store is a very unhealthy place to be, and we do not do anything to prevent the spread of germs.
Some recent news that has come to my attention is that workers …
