GB Dig Pink tournament funds research

While everyone is busy “going green.” the Volleycats have been “going pink.” Last year they raised $1,800. This year, their mission was not to claim the league title, but to raise at least $2,500 for breast cancer research during Breast Cancer Awareness month. They doubled their goal, raising $5,000 in the effort to fight breast cancer.

Although the girls’ swim and dive team endure difficult morning and afternoon practices and refrain from shaving their legs for Homecoming; it all paid off the weekend of Sep. 26 at Counties. Swimming to victory, the team beat Fenton, who got second place, by approximately 300 points.
“I don’t have a social life during swim season,” said junior Lauren Baywol who earned first in the 100 yard breast stroke, “When I’m not swimming or at school, I’m doing my homework or sleeping!”

Amongst the many exciting annual Homecoming festivities, the election of Grand Blanc High School students into the Homecoming Court is one of the most well known. Every year, students are given the opportunity to vote for their fellow classmates whom they feel deserve the title of Homecoming King, Queen, Prince, or Princess.
This year, however, there was some trouble with the voting process during the first and second rounds.

From a middle school exploration to a real-life internship that so many people would dream about, sophomore Lindsay Hannah was selected as a National Student Argonaut with the JASON Project. The JASON Project is a nonprofit subsidiary of the National Geographic Society. The goal of the JASON Project is to expose students to real scientific exploration in order to inspire and motivate them to learn science. Hannah was one of nine students chosen internationally to participate in this project.

The West Campus is slowly becoming home to upperclassmen.
The name the “freshmen campus” no longer fits. Students in every grade have to make the trek across campus, including seniors.
“It’s my senior year,” said Tiffanie Brown, “I would rather spend my time at East Campus with my friends.” Even though Brown is a senior, she has two classes at the so-called, “freshmen building.”

Islamic culture was the topic of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) Luncheon on Tuesday April 28. The opening to the presentation was a recitation of the Quran by Baraa Osman.
The guest speaker of the evening was Mariam Khatib, a Muslim female who was born and raised in Michigan, and has a master’s degree in social studies from Columbia University.
She discussed topics like Islamic beliefs, the Quran, Jihad, Islamic stereotypes, and the struggles Muslims, especially youths, go through.

The drive-in theater scene received great news recently with the purchase of the U.S. 23 Drive-in, making it the last open drive-in in the area for five more years (the Miracle Twin in Burton shut down this season).
This was going to be the last year for the U.S. 23 after its owner, Louis Warrington II, passed away in February and it was put up for sale. However, the Theater Group Inc. based in Rochester Hills signed the lease last April.

Another new policy is about to hit the halls of GBHS. This one has nothing to do with cell phones or library usage. The next big change is weighted grades.
This new grading system will apply to all AP courses. According to Dr. Jennifer Hammond this is because “some students would not select an AP course [in order] to protect their grade point average.”
By weighting grades for AP courses that students take, AP students’ GPAs will go up. If a student gets a B in the class, it is an A …

Taking Steps Against Cancer

Relay for Life honors cancer victims, searches for cure
Every year, the American Cancer Society (ACS), honors cancer survivors and cancer victims at the Relay for Life.
“It’s a wonderful organization that raises quite a bit of money for cancer research and prevention,” said team captain, Allyson Stanley.
