Space battle for the ages

Does learning have to be done in the classroom using a book? According to English teacher James Stuck it doesn’t. On Feb. 24 and 25 he tried out a new way of applying what his students read in the book Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. His first and third hour Honors English 10 classes participated in a nerf war, using strategies they got from the book.
Each battle was between two teams, each started out at a “gate” at opposite ends of the gym. When they were told to go, …

Members of the Grand Blanc area were given an opportunity to meet the man who hopes to be Michigan’s next governor, Rick Snyder, last Monday night. Snyder’s team sponsored a meet-and-greet event at Brickstreet Grill on Grand Blanc Road. The event was free and gave local citizens an opportunity to hear Snyder’s pitch and ask him questions.
Snyder started the event by talking about his “10-point plan” to reinvent Michigan, which basically consisted of creating jobs and fixing the “broken government” in Lansing.
Goodrich senior Tyler Owen attended the event and said, …

Zero Tolerance

Everyone does it. Stick gum to the underside of desks. Write “Jeff was here” on a bathroom stall or call someone a name, hoping the now-degraded person walks in to the bathroom and sees it. But this is not the case with a 12-year-old girl in Forest Hills, New York. This girl, Alexa Gonzalez, had written, “I love my friends Abby and Faith, Lex was here 2/1/10″ on a classroom desk with a green marker. What was the punishment? Two police officers handcuffing the girl and escorting her out of …

Why fix something that’s not broken? This is question has been asked many times since the new Outtakes has been installed at West Campus.
The line’s face-lift includes a blue mosaic wall on the outside and all wood exterior. Aside from the actual Outtakes, several booths, a “study bar”, and new tables have all been installed.
With lunches at West generally being designated for freshmen, the majority of the school is excluded from the new addition.
“I think it would have been better to put the new line at East because there …

An inside look: Mock Trial

Sitting in a circle, the various lawyers and witnesses of the Mock Trial team discuss the possible strengths and weaknesses in both the defense and prosecution cases, and throw out different strategies on how to counteract them and catch other teams off guard. Among these individuals is Jay Jordan, an attorney that is serving on both the defense and prosecution teams, demanding a large, yet equal understanding of each case. After the meeting, Jay and I sat down to have a discussion about Mock Trial, the team’s plans for the …

Giving more than just time

A group of 110 brave students got the opportunity to get out of class to save lives on Friday, Jan. 22. How? These students, primarily juniors and seniors, were donors for the Red Cross blood drive.
At first some students were nervous about needles and the idea of giving blood.
“I’m really, really terrified right now,” said junior Meghan Bade. Luckily, Bade had some assistance as good friend and fellow donor, Nicole DeSousa, supported her with encouraging words and a hand to grip. DeSousa was “super-stoked” to give blood for the cause.
For …

Seniors Rebecca Thresher, Kaitlynn Brasher, Ariele Harris, and junior Jessica Kallie, with sophomore back-up Jin Kwag. They showed their determination and all had to leave right after school and carve the sculpture during the last days of midterms for the competition. “Our ice sculpture, actually made from snow, starts as an 8-foot tall and 6-foot wide and deep snow block,” Barker explained. iPhone vs Droid

Touch screen, quick application launch, digital compass, and camera are just a few of the iPhone’s features. This device has caught the eye of people all over but their attention may turn to a new device created by Motorola, called the Droid.
The iPhone attracts people because it is thin and light weight opposed to the bulkier-looking phones that have big key pads. A touch screen keypad can be used when the phone is turned to the side or upright. It has a 3.0 megapixle camera and a photo application that …

At the end of the marking period many kids rush to bring up their grade last minute; others don’t need it but would love to have those extra points. The Physics class gave out an extra credit assignment to create a mousetrap-powered car that could go 1 meter pulling 100 grams. The project was worth 5 percent of their grade, which is a big help to some people.
“It was a fun way to get the kids involved with a hands-on physics experiment, “said physics teacher Craig Trombly, “and make something …

While many students were out partying, trick-or-treating or passing out candy to children this Halloween, hundreds of thousands of Mexicans and Hispanic Americans were celebrating “El Día de los Muertos,” or “The Day of the Dead.” This holiday honors those who have died in a three–day long celebration that includes food, parades and feasts with family and friends.
