Cop in? or Cop out?
If you can put up with profanity and would enjoy watching an on-screen bromance, then Kevin Smith’s Cop Out is for you.
An unlikely pairing, Jimmy(Bruce Willis) and Paul(Tracy Morgan) are very close partners in the New York Police Department. The movie starts off setting the basis for their “bromance” with Paul giving Jimmy a greeting card to celebrate their ninth anniversary being partners in crime.
The film quickly moves from this tender moment to a harsh, yet comical, interrogation of a Mexican involved in a drug trade. After getting the information needed needed, the pair heads out to catch the criminal but end up in an armed chase around Brooklyn. No matter what, the two always had one another’s back.
When Jimmy’s daughter needs to have her $48,000 wedding paid for, he goes on to sell his prized baseball card, which ends up being stolen. Once he finds out, Paul is willing to do whatever it takes to help his friend, and this is where the real movie begins.
Whether it’s watching a nanny cam placed to check on Paul’s wife or breaking into a drug lord’s house, the two follow each other wherever the wind takes them.
Going into this movie with fairly low expectations, Cop Out was a great surprise. I thought that it would be another lame comedy; especially with Kevin Smith directing.
The unexpected combination of Bruce Willis and the eccentric director of Zack and Miri Make a Porno surprisingly worked out well. This film was packed with laughable moments and witty banter.
The chemistry between Willis and Morgan’s characters was very evident. One would think that they were actually best friends in real life as opposed to just having an on-screen bromance.
This Hot Fuzz-esque movie shows what best friends can do when they have faith in each other and how much can be accomplished when people put others first. I would recommend Cop Out to anyone that wants a good laugh because it was two hours of pure fun.
