The Frenchly influenced Laundry

10 November 2009 No Comments by Emily Hines

Often times, we can find tasteful things in the most surprising of places. I recently ate at The French Laundry restaurant in downtown Fenton and found this statement to be true.

The French Laundry is a small bakery and restaurant almost hidden in the streets of Fenton. If you’re the type of person who likes to stray from the typical food we eat everyday and you prefer new things, particularly foods of different nationalities, The French Laundry is right up your alley.

They serve a wide variety of sandwiches, some of which are made on French bread, and other light midday meal items. In the evening they offer a broad selection of entrees that are actually not French but include cuisines mainly of American decent. The desert items and pastries, however, are a little more French but still contain some American recipes. Although it is called The French Laundry, it is more of an American restaurant with some French twists.

The prices at The French Laundry range from moderate to high, especially during the evening when you will find yourself paying $9-$27 for an entrée. But once you taste the food you tend to forget the amount of money you just paid. The food is made with the most quality of ingredients giving it a rich and genuine taste. It will be almost impossible to go back to microwavable quiche and frozen croissants after tasting the dishes at The French Laundry.

This little eatery is like a piece of France plucked out and placed right in the heart of Michigan. Besides the food, even the atmosphere gives one the feeling of being in France with its unique furniture, dishes and silverware that all happen to be mismatched but still seem to be the type you might find in a French café.

The only turnoff of this restaurant would be a few bullet holes in the side window from a neighborhood child who shot his B.B. gun at the building. Probably not something you would find in France. Even so, they give the tiny confection a little bit of character and thrill.

Overall, I was very impressed with The French Laundry and would give it a solid four out of five stars. Both the food and the environment were excellent and I got to experience the creamiest, crispiest, and best tasting Crème Brulee I have ever tasted. So anytime you feel spontaneous and want to endure something different and delicious, The French Laundry is a fantastic little spot to venture.
