Summer show warms up the fall line-up
With crowded fall line-ups, it’s not common that a summer shows joins the ranks of the fall’s; however, a special exception has been made for one of summer’s most popular shows. With high summer rankings, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance takes on its sixth season this fall rather than holding out until May.
The show has even moved from the middle of the week to the beginning, airing Tuesday at 8p.m. What effect this new time slot will have on the ratings is yet to be seen, its usual Wednesday and Thursday slots have been reserved for prime-time shows.
SYTYCD has adopted a new stage, and as usual continues to adopt new choreographers. The most important news to report is not just the immense amount of talent that the judges unearthed, but also the new styles welcomed to the show. Never before has the style of tap been represented, but this year three tappers: Peter Sabasino, Bianca Revels, and Phillip Attmore made it to the top 20, along with another first, a krumper, Russell Ferguson.
The talent this year has them calling it, “the best ever.”
Yet, that doesn’t stop tragedy from striking the stage. Within the first week of the competition two dancers have been forced to sit back and watch from the stands. Due to an illness, contemporary dancer Billy Bell had to take his leave, and Noelle Marsh sat out the first show due to a knee injury-not knowing if she would be able to dance in the following week.
Aside from injuries, the show must go on. The Judges immediately eliminated two contestants in the first week of the show, rather than by America’s choice.
A pleasant new twist on this season is the audiences’ chance to watch their top 20 dance for an entire hour in their own styles before the real competition begins. This kick-off episode of SYTYCD is a great opportunity to once again remind the audience of the talent this season contains. As the talent is top notch, the judges are expecting to see growth from every dancer, and if they do, this season’s dancing could be the best yet.
