Swim and dive triumphs at county meet
Although the girls’ swim and dive team endure difficult morning and afternoon practices and refrain from shaving their legs for Homecoming; it all paid off the weekend of Sep. 26 at Counties. Swimming to victory, the team beat Fenton, who got second place, by approximately 300 points.
“I don’t have a social life during swim season,” said junior Lauren Baywol who earned first in the 100 yard breast stroke, “When I’m not swimming or at school, I’m doing my homework or sleeping!”
However, the overwhelming hours didn’t prove to be too much for freshman Gina Sancricca. As a rookie on the team, she didn’t have much preparing to do for her two second places.
“I hung out with friends a lot,” Sancricca explains. “It helped me relax.”
The girls are very close-knit and sophomore Sarah Smeets was nothing but positive when explaining how everyone on the team impacts one another.
“The other girls are very supportive and I try to be too,” Smeets said. “It doesn’t feel like a competition between us.”
The hard work and many practices of the swim and dive team may have been a major factor in their success at Counties and hopefully lead them to do just as well at their Division meet in November.
