GB Dig Pink tournament funds research

Efforts to fight cancer at GBHS ended up netting a total of $5,ooo for the cause.
While everyone is busy “going green.” the Volleycats have been “going pink.” Last year they raised $1,800. This year, their mission was not to claim the league title, but to raise at least $2,500 for breast cancer research during Breast Cancer Awareness month. They doubled their goal, raising $5,000 in the effort to fight breast cancer.
“Volleyball players unite to fight…that’s our motto,” said Judy Ulrich who is in charge of the money. “It doesn’t matter which school you’re from, we are all fighting against cancer.”
Dig Pink, a volleyball rally that takes place in hundreds of high schools and colleges across the nation, was held Thursday, Oct. 22. The Volleycats took on the Howell Highlanders.
“We obviously want to win, but it’s also a great way to support the cure for breast cancer,” said junior Lauren Ulrich.
GBHS is the only school in the KLAA to host the rally. There was more support this year with companies donating baskets and food during the rally.
Dig Pink shirts were sold everyday until the event. Fans wore their shirts to school and the tournament.
To raise more money, freshmen, JV, and varsity teams sold raffle tickets for $5. First prize won $500, second prize won $250, and third place won $100. Local businesses also donated prizes. Panera Bread raffled off a year of free bread.
The players not only played for the cure, but also for personal reasons.
“My aunt died from breast cancer,” said sophomore Hayley Hopkins. “We are helping a good foundation.”
The rally helped the Side-Out Foundation receive the money, education, and other resources used to find a cure for the cancer that affects 13 percent of women in the U.S.
