Students will miss school, and classes should accommodate this
With the end of the year, many students are out of class for various reasons. At the same time, many big projects are assigned. See a problem?
Students, seniors primarily, miss a lot of classes at the end of school when their grades matter the most. It starts off with the day of Prom, which because it’s held on a Friday is just asking students to skip, and continues into Senior Skip Day, and then into the Cedar Point trip for Physics students. Also, students simply miss a lot of school because Summer Vacation is so close.
Regardless of if the school endorses these students class, it happens. This is a serious problem too with the end of the year.
In my Probability and Statistics class, in the days leading up to and following Prom, over half the class was gone. All of 4th Marking Period in that class is one large, group based project. Having one member of a group gone repeatedly is bad; having an entire group gone is possibly grade ruining.
But, it’s not limited there. Band classes have their end year concerts, and the important pre-concert practice is broken up by students missing school.
My point is this. These things will continue to happen in years to come. The Cedar Point trip is tradition. So is Prom. So are a lot of other events.
Teachers should try to plan around this more, just to be fair. It’s a fact of high school that students will miss class a lot at the end of the school year, and classes should prepare for this.
